เวลาเราเข้าร้านหนังสือจะไม่ค่อยมีเป้าหมายเท่าไหร่ น้อยครั้งที่จะเข้าไปเพราะตั้งใจจะซื้อหนังสือเล่มใดเล่มหนึ่งโดยเฉพาะ ส่วนมากจะเข้าไปเดินเล่น อารมณ์ประมาณเดินเล่นในสวนชมนกชมไม้ ต่างก็ตรงแปลงดอกไม้ของเราเป็นตู้หนังสือแถวยาวๆ แล้วเราก็ใช้เวลาค่อยๆ เดินดูแต่ละตู้ หัวข้อที่ไม่สนใจเช่น หนังสือธุรกิจหรือ how to ทั้งหลายก็จะดูน้อยหน่อย แต่ก็มีเหมือนกันที่ปกสวยๆ หยุดให้เราหยิบมาดู แต่ส่วนใหญ่จะเน้นส่วนของวรรณกรรมทั้งเด็กและผู้ใหญ่

หลังๆ สังเกตว่าจะโปรดปรานหนังสือเด็กเป็นพิเศษ เพราะกองดองที่อยู่บนตู้ที่บ้าน กว่าครึ่งไม่เป็นหนังสือภาพก็เป็นหนังสือวรรณกรรมเด็กที่มีภาพประกอบ ^-^

ล่าสุดคือเล่มนี้ พึ่งซื้อมาสดๆ ร้อนๆ เมื่อวาน ความจริงเห็นเล่มนี้ใน amazon.com นานมากแล้ว (บางทีถ้างานเยอะ หรือขี้เกียจออกจากบ้านก็จะเข้าไปชมดอกไม้หนังสือในเวบนี้แทน) แต่พึ่งเห็นที่ร้านหนังสือในไทย เห็นแล้วก็ชอบทันที เรื่องง่ายๆ รูปง่ายๆ สีง่ายๆ ดูแล้วมีความสุขดี ชอบการเย็บเล่มด้วย เหมือนหนังสือสมัยเก่า…

The School for Cats เป็นหนึ่งในหนังสือชุด A Jenny’s Cat Club Book เขียนและวาดโดย Esther Averill พึ่งเอามาพิมพ์ใหม่โดย The New York Review น่าเก็บเป็น collection มากมาย แต่ที่เห็นที่ร้านมีเล่มนี้เล่มเดียว

Whenever I have spare time, I have a habit of wandering around in a bookshop. The feeling is like taking a stroll in a garden, admiring green trees and colorful flowers. It’s just that the flowers are books and I can’t take them home without paying. Generally, I would spend hours browsinging from this shelf to that shelf. Business or how-to section would be sections I visit least and literature and children’s book would be always my favorite.

It seems that I have been really crazy about children’s books lately, judging from my pile of books, in which most of them are either picture books or children’s chapter books. Most of them are illustrated.

I just got this book. In fact, I have known this book from amazon.com but never found it sold in Bangkok until yesterday. Simple story, cute drawings with smart limited color composition are enough reasons for me to pay for it. I also really love the book bindery. Looks so classic!

The School for Cats is one of A Jenny’s Cat Club Book series written and illustrated by Esther Averill, recently republished by The New York Review. It would be nice if I could have the whole collection!

หายไปนาน(ตามสไตล์อารมณ์ติ๊ด^-^’) เครียด+เซ็ง+เศร้ามาหลายอาทิตย์ วันนี้ขอระรื่นชื่นใจกับผลงานล่าสุดของเราสองพี่น้อง booktailor สักนิด ความจริง ‘ท่อมคะนะซะวะ’ นี่ออกมาได้ประมาณอาทิตย์หนึ่งและเปิดตัวเรียบร้อยไปแล้วในบล๊อกคนเขียน ไปดูเบื้องหลังและเลย์เอาท์เนื้อในได้

งานนี้ตั้งใจทำกันมาก คนเขียนเขียนเป็นปี คนจัดเล่มทำเป็นเดือน ตรวจปรู๊ฟกันเองสิบแปดล้านรอบ(เว่อร์ไปนิด แต่หลายรอบจนมึนจริงๆ นะ ถ้ายังมีที่ผิดอีก ต้องขออภัย ณ ที่นี้ด้วย-_-’) ความจริงก็ตั้งใจทำกันมาทุกเล่มแหละ แต่งานนี้ทุ่มสุดตัว กำไรไม่ต้องคิดกันแล้ว ขอให้หนังสือออกมาสี่สีทั้งเล่ม สวยและอ่านง่ายอย่างที่ตั้งใจกันเป็นพอ

และก็ออกมางามอย่างที่ตั้งใจกันจริงๆ ต้องยกความดีงามให้โรงพิมพ์ภาพพิมพ์ ที่คอยอดทนกับเราสองพี่น้องที่ไม่ค่อยจะรู้เรื่อง ช่วยพิมพ์งานออกมาได้งามสมใจ เรียกว่าสีเป๊ะๆ ไม่มีเพี้ยนเลย^-^

Sorry for the long absence. It’s been a long hectic month with work and stress from political tension in Thailand. I just hope that everything will get better very soon.

Anyway, these pictures above are of the latest book from booktailor, our little book publisher. The book is written by my sister and designed by me. It’s about travel and culture in Kanazawa, a charming small city in Japan.

It’s the best book we have ever produced and we intend to make better and better books in the future

Book covers I designed. Both are Japanese fiction translated into Thai. The first one is romantic comedy sets in a Japanese old town neighborhood where the protagonists love to hang around at night drinking and meeting people. The second one is a hilarious story of quirky psychiatrist who cures his patient with medicine shots and weird behavior.

ปีใหม่ผ่านไปอย่างรวดเร็ว แต่วันนี้ก็ตื่นมาด้วยอารมณ์เฉื่อยๆ ยังอยากจะนั่งเรื่อยเปื่อยไปเรื่อยๆ

มานั่งนึกดู ปีที่ผ่านมานับเป็นปีที่ดีปีหนึ่ง ไม่เจ็บไข้ได้ป่วย ไม่มีเรื่องกังวลใจ มีงานมาเรื่อยๆ อ่านหนังสือได้เยอะกว่าปี 51 สิบกว่าเล่ม แต่ซื้อมาดองไว้เยอะกว่าปี 51 สิบเท่า อันนี้เว่อร์ไป แต่ก็ซื้อมาเยอะจริงๆ ยิ่งช่วงเดือนกันยา-ตุลานี่ซื้อทุกอาทิตย์ อาทิตย์ละหลายเล่ม กำลังคิดว่าปีนี้จะถือศีลอดไม่ซื้อหนังสือสักสามเดือน จะทำได้ป่าวหว่า…

ได้ไม่ได้ค่อยมาดูกัน ตอนนี้มาดูหนังสือภาพสุดสวยของเรา(แต่ผีมือคนอื่น)กันดีกว่า The Curious Garden เล่มนี้ วาดและเขียนโดย Peter Brown

เรื่องมีอยู่ว่า กาลครั้งหนึ่ง(ก็ตอนที่คนเขียนเขาเริ่มเขียนนั่นแหละ) มีเด็กชายตัวน้อยชื่อเลียมอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองใหญ่สีทึม ไร้ชีวิตชีวาของสีเขียวของต้นไม้ อยู่มาวันหนึ่งเลียมพบดอกไม้และต้นไม้เล็กๆ ขึ้นแซมอยู่บนทางรถไฟที่ถูกทิ้งร้าง เด็กชายเลียมรู้ได้ทันทีว่า ดอกไม้ต้นไม้เล็กๆ นี้ต้องการคนดูแล

เด็กน้อยใช้เวลาค่อยๆ รดน้ำพรวนดิน ทำนุบำรุงเหล่าต้นไม้ใกล้ตายให้ฟื้นกลับมาชูช่อเขียวสวยอีกครั้ง หยดน้ำหนึ่งหยดเพิ่มความชุ่มฉ่ำให้ผืนดินมหาศาล จากวันเป็นเดือน พุ่มไม้เล็กๆ เริ่มเติบโตกลายเป็นสวนเขียวชอุ่มเต็มพื้นที่ทางรถไฟ

เหล่าต้นไม้งอกเงยราวกับจะสำรวจพื้นที่บ้านเมืองที่ไม่เคยมีสีเขียว จากพื้นที่ทางรถไฟ มันขยายตัวไปโผล่หน้าบ้านผู้คน ตามทางถนน ตามป้าย ตามเสา พอถึงตอนนี้ก็ไม่ได้มีเลียมเพียงคนเดียวแล้วที่คอยดูต้นไม้เหล่านั้น ผู้คนในเมืองเริ่มออกมารดน้ำ พรวนดิน ดูสวนนอกบ้าน ไม่นานเมืองที่เคยแห้งแล้ง ก็กลับมามีชีวิตชีวาอีกครั้ง…จบ

เรื่องมันง่ายๆ แค่นี้เอง แต่ในความเป็นจริง เราก็ยังตัดไม้ ตัดถนนเอาพื้นที่มาสร้างบ้านสร้างตึกสีเทากันอยู่ดี…

New Year day has passed but I don’t feel like working at all today. How nice to be idle thinking of nothing!

Come to think of it, last year was one of my best years. With good health, no worries of money and job and could finish more books! But it seems that I bought too many books in 2009. I wonder if I can buy nothing for at least 3 months? Seems impossible

Anyway, let’s take a look at this gorgeous picture book here The Curious Garden written and illustrated by Peter Brown

The story is that once upon a time there was a little boy named Liam who lived in a lifeless city without green sight of trees at all. One day he found a small patch of color, wildflowers and plants in a deserted railway. He knew they needed a gardener. From that day, Liam spent his time watering and pruning even singing, taking care of plants and trees. The trees grew and grew. They didn’t just grow in the railway. Now they grew everywhere, in front of houses, on the road, on the signs. The most surprising thing is that there’s not only Liam who took care of the garden anymore. Now everyone in the city came out and helped taking care of their becoming-green city! The entire city had blossomed again!…The end.

The story seems very simple but you know that in reality, there are so many area in this world that green trees were cut away so that there will be enough space for grey lifeless buildings for people to stay in…

โปสการ์ดล่าสุดจาก postcrossing ตื่นเต้นเพราะเป็นการ์ดใบแรกที่ตรงตามสเป็คที่เราอยากได้ นั่นคือการ์ดเกี่ยวกับภาพประกอบหนังสือเด็ก การ์ดนี้มาจากหนังสือเด็กชื่อ Ronja the robber’s daughter ของ Astrid Lindgren นักเขียนชาวสวีเดนที่เขียน Pippi Longstocking ขอสารภาพว่าเราไม่เคยอ่านทั้งสองเล่ม แต่มีโรนญ่า ฉบับแปลเป็นไทยอยู่บนชั้นนานแล้ว และก็กำลังหา Pippi เวอร์ชั่นสวยๆอยู่
พอได้การ์ดมาอย่างนี้ก็รีบไปรื้อหนังสือมาเตรียมไว้ ว่าจะอ่านๆ มานานแล้ว คราวนี้ได้ฤกษ์เสียที จะได้รู้ว่ารูปที่อยู่ในการ์ดนี่พูดถึงอะไร

สิ่งที่สนุกอีกอย่างของการเล่น postcrossing คือการได้แสตมป์สวยๆ พ่วงมาด้วย ชอบชุด the Simpsons นี่ แต่ก็ไม่เท่า Tiffany Lamp แถม postcrosser จากอเมริกาคนนี้เขียนมาน่ารักซะด้วย…

The latest postcard I received via postcrossing. I’m very excited as this is the first postcard that falls in what I request, something about books especially children’s books illustration. This one is of a children’s book called Ronja the robber’s daughter by Astrid Lindgren a famous Swedish author who wrote Pippi Longstocking I haven’t read either one of them but I have already had Ronja ready on my bookshelf for very long time. Now it’s good time to finally read the book so that I know what this illustration on the card talks about ^-^

Other good thing about postcrossing is that you also have some nice beautiful stamps. I love this ones too, especially the Tiffany lamp. I also love what this Postcrosser from USA wrote, she said;

“I am sending you a lot of positive thoughts. Catch them!”

Just makes me smile

What’s the most enjoyable, most fun, most just-darn-entertaining book you’ve read recently? (Mind you, this doesn’t necessarily mean funny, since we covered that already. Just … GOOD.)

This is my first time participating in Booking Through Thursday. My answer for this question is Anne of Green Gable series.

The story is that few months ago I got a serious dry eyes symptom that I couldn’t read more than one page of a book. It was so boring, being unable to read. So, I downloaded the audio version of this book, chosen randomly, from Project Gutenberg and tried listening to it. I didn’t finish the audio but the first chapter somehow captured my interest and when I found this beautiful edition I bought it right away.

After finishing the second book, Anne of Avonlea, I decided to order the whole series which are eight books altogether! It’s quite rare for me to read books written by the same author. It’s not that I want to know what would happen with Anne’s life as she’s growing up. I just want to experience the same happy feeling just as when I read the first two books. I don’t know how to explain it. May it be Anne’s character of pure optimistic or beautiful narration of the settings etc. Let’s just say these books make me smile

So far, I have finished 4 of Montgomery’s books, the first three of Anne series plus her novel The Blue Castle, and I love them all! I think her strength is the language. Her narration of the settings or the characters’ feelings are simple, straightforward and beautiful. There are several paragraphs that I actually wrote down in my notebook just for the sake of its beauty.
This is one of my favorite paragraphs;

“I love to sit there and listen to the silence of the grove. Have you ever noticed how many different silences there are, Gilbert? The silence of the woods…of the shore…of the meadows…of the night…of the summer afternoon. All different because all the undertones that thread them are different. I’m sure if I were totally blind and insensitive to heat and cold I could easily tell just where I was just by the quality of the silence about me.”

วันก่อนไปรื้อตู้หนังสือแก้เครียด เจอหนังสือเล่มนี้ ดีใจมากเพราะเป็นหนังสือเล่มโปรดสมัยเด็กที่เหลือรอดมาได้ เล่มอื่นๆไม่รู้หายไปไหนหมด

ชื่อหนังสือ คือนิทานแสนสุข แปลจาก My Happy Bedtime Stories ไม่มีชื่อคนเขียน คนแปลคือ อ. สนิทวงศ์ ปีที่พิมพ์เป็นปีเกิดเราพอดี จำไม่ได้ว่าได้มาได้ยังไง อาจจะเป็นหนังสือที่ตกทอดมาจากพี่อีกทีหนึ่ง

จะว่าไปหนังสือเล่มนี้น่าจะเป็นต้นเหตุที่ทำให้เราสายตาสั้น เพราะความที่ชอบมาก เลยเอาไปอ่านในรถตอนเช้าเวลาไปโรงเรียน ตอนบ่ายเวลากลับบ้าน เรียกว่ามีติดรถไว้เลย อ่านซ้ำไปซ้ำมาไม่มีเบื่อเลย รูปประกอบตอนนี้เราว่ามันไม่สวย แต่ในความรู้สึกของเด็ก แค่มีรูปประกอบก็สนุกแล้ว

เดี๋ยวต้องหาเวลาอ่านซ้ำอีกทีดีกว่า ดูซิว่าจะสนุกเหมือนตอนเด็กๆไหม

Whenever I feel so tired or upset from something, I would go to my happy corner…my bookshelves.

The other day I found this book from my old bookshelves. I was so glad as this was one of my favorite books when I was a kid. The name is ‘My Happy Bedtime Stories’ but there is no credits of who was the writer and illustrator. It was printed in the year I was born but I cannot remember how I got the book. It might have belonged to my sister once.

I think I can accuse this book as the reason why I wear thick glasses now. I liked this book so much that I reread it several times in the car on my way to school and again on my way back home. I think I must have read it a thousand times already at that time.

They are all happy tales and I wonder if I can still enjoy it as much now that I’m so grown up…

It’s a good memory though…

The Pied Piper เล่มนี้เป็นหนังสือเก่าซื้อมาจาก Etsy ปกติไม่นิยมหนังสือเก่า แต่เล่มนี้เห็นแล้วอยากได้มาก เพราะรูปวาดสไตล์นี้หายากแล้ว เก่าขนาดไม่มีเครดิตคนเขียน คนวาด คนพิมพ์เลยแหละ โชคดีที่ไม่แพงมากและสภาพดีสีสดเหมือนใหม่ เลยกลายเป็นบ้าหนังสือภาพไปอีก…

I bought this beautiful The Pied Piper from Etsy. I’m not a real fan of vintage books but this one looked so gorgeous that I couldn’t help myself. This illustration style is pretty hard to find now, especially around here in Bangkok. The book came in good condition, almost like new and what vibrant colors! I’m so happy with this book! I didn’t think of collecting picture books but it seems that I have bought a lot lately…

ช่วงนี้งานเยอะ แต่ข้อดีของการมีงานเข้ามาหลายชิ้นในเวลาเดียวกันคือทำให้เรามีสมาธิที่จะโฟกัสไปในงานแต่ละชิ้น และอู้น้อยลงเพราะกลัวทำงานไม่ทัน แถมยังมีสมาธิเผื่อแผ่ไปยังกิจกรรมอ่านหนังสือด้วย

เป็นคนชอบอ่านหนังสือก็จริง แต่ความที่มีหนังสือเยอะเกินไปแล้วไม่รู้จะเลือกอ่านอันไหนก่อน เลยมีหลายครั้งที่อ่านเล่มละนิดเล่มละหน่อย ผลคืออ่านไม่จบสักเล่มสักที ฉะนั้นถ้าคราวไหนอ่านหนังสือจบเล่มรวดเดียวจะรู้สึกภูมิใจมาก แต่ช่วงนี้สมาธิไม่แตกซ่าน พอทำงานเสร็จก็สามารถหยิบเล่มใดเล่มหนึ่งมาแล้วอ่านต่อรวดเดียวได้เลย แต่อาจจะเพราะว่าช่วงนี้กำลังอยู่ในโหมดหนังสือเด็ก ประมาณอ่านไม่ยาก มันเลยจบได้เร็วด้วยมั๊ง

รู้อย่างนี้เลยรีบไปขุดหนังสือเด็กทั้งหลายที่ดองๆไว้มาอ่าน บางเล่มก็เหลืองเชียว บางเล่มอ่านสนุกมาก จนอดด่าตัวเองไม่ได้ว่าไม่รู้จักอ่านตั้งแต่แรก

ช่วงนี้งานเยอะก็จริง เหนื่อยก็จริง แต่พอคิดว่าเดี๋ยววันนี้ทำงานส่วนนี้เสร็จก็จะได้ไปนั่งสบายๆ อ่านหนังสือแล้วนะ มันก็มีกำลังใจขึ้น ทำให้เครียดน้อยลงเยอะเลย

I have been quite busy for a couple of weeks but the good thing of having several projects at the same time is that it makes you focus and not slack away. I can even concentrate more on my reading…

Having a lot of books, I have a habit of reading few pages of each book at the same time so it’s quite hard to finish one book quickly and whenever I could do that I would be very proud:-)

Now that I can have so much concentration, I take advantage of it, digging up my long shelved books, mostly children’s fiction, to read. I enjoy it very much!

It’s a happy feeling to think of a quiet night with some good books after long hard-working hours of each day…isn’t it?

ทีนี้ก็กลายเป็นว่าถ้าหนังสือสวยมากๆ ก็จะเก็บไว้ดูเอง จะหาว่างกก็ได้ แต่คนเราก็ต้องมีของที่หวงกันมั่งสิ
ใช่ไหมๆ แต่ก็รู้สึกผิดเหมือนกันนะเราควรจะส่งเสริมการอ่านเด็กๆ นี่นา ^-^’ (ต่อไปอาแมวจะซื้อหนังสือ
ให้มากกว่านี้ละกันนะ คุณหลานๆ)

I bought this book long time ago. I intended to buy it for my nieces at first and then
changed my mind and kept it to myself. I’m a person who take good care of books so
it breaks my heart whenever I see my little nieces almost tearing books.

I know that we should support our kids to read but sometimes I just can’t help it
